“Citizen Airmen”
The Air Force Reserve is a strategic reserve of the United States Air Force critical to the overall mission of the Department of Defense and the Air Force. It is organized, trained and equipped to provide airpower for national security and disaster relief, as well as airlift support for humanitarian missions.
Air Force reservists have civilian careers but meet for training once a month and 2 weeks out of the year with their respective reserve units. Reserve units are often collocated with regular active duty units, thus allowing them to maintain flight hours in all of the USAF’s aircraft, and many reservists with an active flying status will serve up to 3 or 4 months a year, if not longer depending on the needs of the Air Force.

Air Force Reserve: Special Challenge Coins for a Unique Mission
The Air Force Reserve is the only United States Air Force unit that conducts two unique mission sets:
- The Air Force Reserve can carry out aerial spray missions using insecticides or herbicides with C-130 aircraft that have been specifically equipped for this upon request from local, state, or federal agencies.
- The Air Force Reserve is the only organization within the Air Force that has aerial weather reconnaissance capabilities. This includes hurricane and typhoon penetration by WC-130J aircraft, which augments NOAA's WP-3D aircraft fleet.
Aerial firefighting is also done in collaboration with the Air National Guard and has no counterpart in the Regular Air Force. Using specially equipped C-130 Hercules aircraft, certain elements of the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard can carry out forest fire and wildfire suppression operations utilizing the palletized Modular Airborne FireFighting System (MAFFS).
The Air Force Reserve also takes part in counter-narcotics operations alongside the US Coast Guard and other federal agencies.
- Traditional Air Force Reservist Roles -
The Air Force thoroughly maintains its units to be ready at all times for defense of the nation. As such, traditional reservists are usually classified by the following types:
Ready Reserve - These reservists are available for immediate mobilization if their skills are needed.
Standby Reserve - These reservists are not immediately available for mobilization, but they can be called up if their skills are needed.
Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) - These reservists are not assigned to a unit, but they can be mobilized if their skills are needed.
Retired Reserve - These reservists have retired from the military, but they can still be called up if their skills are needed.
The Air Force Reserve stands ready to defend America’s airspace from all intruders and threats, and US DOD Coins is here to help our brave men and women show their pride with custom challenge coins!

Custom Air National Guard Challenge Coins
As a federal military reserve force, the Air National Guard is an Air Force militia organized and federally recognized by Title 10 of the United States Code. Federal recognition amplifies state authority to organize, train and equip Air National Guard units for state use under the Air Force's Total Force concept.
When Air National Guard units are federalized for a war or national emergency, they operate under the Air Expeditionary Force (AEF) concept.
Their federal mission is to provide protection for critical domestic infrastructure, including energy production and distribution facilities, transportation networks and key public facilities.
The Air National Guard also provides airlift support to other federal agencies and partners, such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Air National Guard units are also often called upon to support state and local authorities in response to natural disasters.
In addition to its federal and state missions, the Air National Guard also has a unique dual-mission capability as both a federal and a state organization. This allows the Air National Guard to be mobilized for federal missions while still remaining under state control.
Some of the Air National Guard’s general purpose primary fighter jet aircraft are the A-10 Thunderbolt, the F-15 Eagle, F-16 Falcon, and F-22 Raptor.
The Air National Guard is headquartered at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, and is led by the Chief of the National Guard Bureau.

THE EVOLUTION OF CHALLENGE COIN AWARDS
Eight years ago, the Challenge Coin industry had what we call a recipe for designing challenge coins. Round, flat, and empty.
This type of Challenge Coin is a classic, and it still being used nowadays, But people were somewhat asking for a little more spice, uniqueness, and bold designs.
That's when clients started to bring more complex ideas. Instead of refusing to take on the project as most other companies did, we embraced the challenge. We began to increase difficulty and detail to coins; we started experimenting and bringing expectations to whole new level. Some worked; some didn't.
In the end, what was the client's reaction to their finished project?
