Custom Military Belt Buckles

 - A Secret History and Longstanding Tradition by the U.S. Navy

The US Navy has a long history of sailors wearing custom belt buckles on their standard-issue web belts since the early 1900's, with the tradition first recorded by the British all the way back in the 1600's. For officers and enlisted personnel alike, a custom military belt buckle is an excellent way to express a division's unique traits and personality while remaining within uniform regulations when deployed at sea.

Fast forward to present day, and it's easier than ever to design your very own belt buckle with the help of U.S. DOD Coins, whether you're a Seaman Recruit, a Navy Chief Petty Officer, or a Mustang fresh out of Officer Candidate School.

A Short History of the Military Belt Buckle

Belt buckles have been a part of military uniforms for centuries. In fact, they were first introduced as a way to keep soldiers' cloaks fastened, and to secure armor and weapons during battle. The first belt buckle was created in the 13th century and was made out of iron. It wasn't until the 16th century that belt buckles began to be decorated with embellishments like jewels and engravings.

Belt buckles became increasingly decorative as time went on. For the military, belt buckles often indicated an officer's rank, and for civilians as well as soldiers, custom belt buckles were often a status symbol. By the 18th century, they were often made out of silver or gold and featured intricate designs. Belt buckles continued to be an important part of military uniforms into the 19th and 20th centuries, just as they are today.

US Navy Belts Worn by Today's Enlisted Sailors and Officers

The standard-issue Navy web belt is used by the majority of sailors, valued for its durability, ease of adjustment, and low cost to produce. It is worn with both the coveralls and the Navy Working Uniform Type III. But not all Navy personnel wear the same type or color of belt buckle, even if they are in the same unit together.

Chief Petty Officers have been a part of the US Navy since the 1800s and are the most senior enlisted rank. Responsible for leading and supervising sailors of all ranks, Chiefs play an important role in carrying out officers' orders among enlisted men and women, and are considered the backbone of the Navy.

Chief Petty Officers not only wear a different uniform than other enlisted sailors ranked E-6 and below (who don the classic Cracker Jack dress blues and white sailor cap), they also wear a unique belt buckle style that is different from other enlisted ranks. This buckle is gold-colored and made out of brass, usually adorned with either a gold anchor and silver "USN" across it or a wreath and star design. This style of belt buckle is a symbol of distinction and honor, and is worn with pride by Chief Petty Officers everywhere.

Navy Mustangs are also different from enlisted sailors and Chief Petty Officers, and no, it's not because they're horses. Rather, they are enlisted men and women who become commissioned officers in a short amount of time while serving on active duty continuously. This could be due to a recommendation from an officer in their division as well as completing their college degree, often done while deployed aboard ship in their spare time.

Mustangs are usually required to serve 5 years enlistment, earn a Good Conduct Medal, and have a degree. Highly regarded by both enlisted military and officers alike, Commanding Officers and Master Chiefs are very likely to appreciate having a "Mustang" around, as they provide an extra line of support in maintaining troop morale, especially since they've already "been there, done that, and got the t-shirt".

But don't worry, junior NCO's, because even enlisted sailors below the rank of E-7 can wear custom decorative belt buckles, though they'll have to be silver, as that is the standard color for the majority of enlisted sailors' belts.

Who Has the Final Say on What Belt Buckle You Can Wear on Duty in the Military?

The good news is, the US Navy has a lot of flexibility overall when it comes to what belt buckle a sailor can choose to wear (outside of an official uniform inspection), so check with your command or mynavyhr.navy.mil for current uniform regulations if you have any questions.

And, many sailors already know from experience that once underway aboard ship, the Captain of the vessel will often allow certain liberties when it comes to uniform wear and appearance. The "no-shave chit" comes to mind, as well as getting to wear a head cover of your own choosing aboard submarine on a long deployment- yes, even your trusty vintage New York Yankees hat.
